Tata Sons Leadership Dispute Escalates as Noel Tata Challenges Chandrasekaran’s Reappointment

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the growing leadership dispute at Tata Sons, accusing the BJP-led government of treating Indian businesses as its “plaything”.

In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi alleged that Tata was being “criminally destroyed” and questioned why business leaders were reluctant to speak out. He urged industry leaders to break their silence and said his party would seek justice in the matter.

Gandhi’s remarks are political allegations made amid an escalating dispute over the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman of Tata Sons.

Noel Tata challenges reappointment
The controversy intensified after Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, challenged the validity of the Tata Sons board resolution reappointing Chandrasekaran for another five-year term beginning February 2027.

In a letter dated October 26 to Tata Sons company secretary Suprakash Mukhopadhyay, Noel alleged that the September 17 board meeting had procedural irregularities. He argued that Chandrasekaran’s reappointment had not been specifically mentioned in the agenda circulated to directors.

Noel also questioned why a selection committee required under the company’s Articles of Association had not been constituted and contended that the necessary affirmative approval from directors appointed under Article 104B had not been obtained. He described the resolution as void. These are objections raised by Noel, and the validity of the resolution remains disputed.

Seven-day deadline for records
Noel has sought the complete audio and video recordings of the September 17 meeting, final or revised minutes, voting details, copies of the relevant agendas and the certified resolution. He has also requested documents relating to regulatory filings.

He has asked the company to provide the records within seven days and urged it not to take further action based on the disputed resolution until the issues are addressed.

Tata Sons, however, has previously defended Chandrasekaran’s reappointment, stating that the board’s decision was valid and supported by legal opinions.

Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word.

How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?

Indian business is not Modi and Shah’s plaything. You lack courage. We don’t. We will ensure justice for these crimes.
