Zelenskyy Urges Tougher Sanctions After Deadly Strike on Dnipro Rail Station

DNIPRO: At least 13 people were killed and 10 others injured after a Russian jet-powered drone struck a railway station in Dnipro, in central Ukraine, on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said. The attack targeted passenger trains at the station, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to call for stronger international action against Moscow.

According to Zelenskyy, Russian drones struck the platform where a regular passenger train and a scheduled passenger service were standing. The attack reportedly hit two trains, causing casualties among people at the railway station.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy described the incident as a “horrific attack” on the country’s railway infrastructure. He expressed condolences to the families and friends of those killed and said emergency services were working at the scene. Ten people were reported injured, according to the information cited by the Ukrainian president.

The attack adds to concerns over the safety of civilian transport infrastructure amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Further details about the circumstances of the strike and the extent of the damage were not immediately available in the information provided.

Zelenskyy calls for tougher sanctions
Zelenskyy also questioned Russia’s continued attacks following the easing of restrictions on some Russian oligarchs and the energy sector. He accused Moscow of escalating attacks against Ukrainians instead of taking steps to reduce tensions.

The Ukrainian president said the United States and Europe must respond firmly to what he described as Russia’s aggressive conduct. He argued that sanctions targeting Moscow and its war machine should remain in place for as long as the conflict continues.

Calling for additional economic pressure, Zelenskyy urged the European Union, the United States and the Group of Seven (G7) countries to impose fresh and tougher sanctions on Russia.

“Now is the time” for stronger measures, he said in his post, thanking those who have continued to support Ukraine.

The Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly called on its Western partners to maintain pressure on Russia and strengthen measures aimed at limiting its ability to sustain the war. The latest attack is likely to intensify Kyiv’s calls for international action, although any new sanctions would depend on decisions by the countries concerned.
