Spain Train Collision Kills 68; Probe Focuses on How Two Trains Shared Track

Madrid: At least 68 people were killed and several others injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, triggering a major rescue operation and a three-day national mourning period.

The accident occurred on the Madrid-Seville railway line in Toledo province. Preliminary reports indicated that a Renfe train collided with the rear of a stationary Iryo train. The circumstances that brought the two trains onto the same section of track remain unclear.

Authorities have ordered a comprehensive judicial and technical investigation to determine whether signalling systems, train movement controls, track conditions and automated safety mechanisms were functioning properly.
